Learners take on ‘Roofs’ at Gorran Haven.

January and February Classes 2014, have once again excelled themselves when challenged with my Class Exercise of Pen & Wash.  (See Photo image below).

'Roof Tops' at Gorran Haven

‘Roof Tops’ at Gorran Haven

Perspective was a challenge plus the added complication of making the above image a more pleasing composition.  The Large chimney stands out a little too much for my liking in the centre area of the image and the roof in the foreground area to the right points directly at the vertical angle of the church tower, almost like an arrow.

The two roofs to the left of the picture seem quite dominant, making the picture seem very wide.  I liked the idea of turning this image into a portrait painting, which might work better.

What do you think?  See what the learners did below.

Not at my classes, then ‘Have a Go’ and please send me your results, via email with a jpeg attachment.

These are terrific pieces of work. Congrats all round! Its a ridiculously hard subject to draw, let alone paint! I was lucky enough to be with Yvette’s painting group at Gorran last year and have my own photos of this scene but haven’t dared try doing any work from it yet. Maybe (just maybe!) these paintings might now encourage me to have a go.
I like all these paintings shown here, but the 7th one down with the sloping church tower makes me wonder if a picture with ALL the buildings leaning to one side might make an interesting scene suggesting them being blown by the wind? Just an idea?…..
    Well done all!
